To the thousands of people who are tested positive for HIV every day, the news comes like a death sentence. In locations where hundreds of people are receiving this news every day, Partners Worldwide is banding together with our partners in Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa to restore hope to HIV/AIDS vulnerable and affected populations through job creation.
HIV/AIDS corrodes societies in many ways. High infection rates in people in their 20-,30- and 40s has removed those who were once the breadwinners and caregivers of society, leaving already vulnerable family members without an income and at an even higher risk of poverty.
According to the UN’s 2007 report on HIV/AIDS, Sub-Saharan Africa is “the most affected region in the global AIDS epidemic.” People living with HIV in Southern Africa make up 35% of all people infected with HIV. With infection rates ranging from 15 – 28% in many of these countries, it is no surprise that HIV/AIDS has a crippling affect on the social and economic foundation of a community.
In response to this crisis, Partners Worldwide launched Jobs2Hope, a two year pilot project designed to bring together Partners Worldwide affiliates who are implementing economic responses focused on communities affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis in Southern Africa. Jobs2Hope kicked off in January 2009 and has set an ambitious goal to create 1,000 Jobs that support (and bring HOPE to) HIV-AIDS vulnerable and affected populations, while also building a community of shared vision, prayer, and learning.
