John Mwanza has always been a farmer, but never satisfied his goal to farm profitably. His yields were always average or below average and he didn’t know how to increase them. It was a daily struggle for John, whose family of five was often hit hard during the “hunger months” of December through March. He also faced another well-known challenge—sending his children to school.
In 2007, a friend told John about a farming program he had recently joined through the Reformed Church of Zambia’s Diaconia, an affiliate of Partners Worldwide. With nothing to lose, John decided to join in.

In a rural area one hour from the capital city, Lusaka, Villages of Hope employs over 175 Zambians who work to support children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, offering education and training in entrepreneurship.

During his last semester at Makere University, agriculture and business student Innocent Muhabwa walked into the Partners Worldwide office in Kampala. He was in search of any volunteer opportunity, for an idealist like him, to tackle poverty and malnutrition through business. “I now understand God’s desire to use me and my business for His purpose,” says Daniel Mulungu, a husband, father, and entrepreneur in the heart of Mbeya, Tanzania.
After experiencing the devastating loss of a child and the resulting closure of his business in 2007, Daniel returned to Mbeya in 2008 with no home, no business, and very little in assets. Starting with $300, he began buying ingredients to mix animal feed and sell it to local residents who raise chickens, pigs and cows.
