Talanta Finance is a local lending partner in post-civil war Gulu, Uganda, that provides access to capital and business training to medium, small and micro entrepreneurs. Gulu is known worldwide as the epicenter of the civil war known for atrocities of rebel forces against the civilian population. Today, members of Talanta Finance are creating pathways out of poverty through business development, and are leading the way from dependency to economic independence and stable growth. Since 2006, Partners Worldwide has partnered with Talanta to offer needed capital to grow the loan portfolio, management assistance and technical and business support to small holder farmers in their Oxen Traction program.

Through personal savings and a starter loan from Talanta Finance, Patrick Kidaga and his wife Harriet launched their own business in 2006 with the determination to stabilize the growing economy of post-war Gulu, Uganda.

“Our economic status has changed with a smiling face,” says Patrick, owner of Kidman Company, who decided to sell auto parts after watching commercial trucks—shipping crops and goods—pass through Gulu on the road between Kampala and Sudan in the midst of civil war.

Yet, during the first year as a small retailer, he adds, competing with foreign investors in auto parts was no easy task.
