Southeast Asia Regional Update November 2021

The year 2021 is coming to a close, and to say that it has been a challenging year, would probably be an understatement. The Southeast Asia region fought battles left and right: a pandemic that deeply impacted the lives of families and friends, a coup that has brought about civil disobedience movements, hundreds of thousands of displaced people and caused deaths to thousands, a skyrocketing unemployment rate, job losses, and businesses closing down – these are just a few of what the region had to weather this 2021. Yet, in all these, we continue to move forward faithfully!

Praises in the Philippines

We praise God for allowing us to have a three day in person training for our partner Convoy of Hope Philippines (COH). The train the trainers was held at a very idyllic location and it was such a blessing to be surrounded and reminded of God’s beautiful creation. Seventeen people, composed of nine COH staff and eight community leaders, were equipped and empowered to become “discipreneurs”. The foundation of this partnership is our shared loved for Jesus and our desire in building flourishing communities through business, and seeing these communities transformed by the love God!

The construction of the Community Feed mill for our partner, Katuwang Resource Center, is ongoing, the equipment has already been purchased, and by the first week of December we are optimistic that it will be operational -- ready to serve the community! This project has been delayed because of the pandemic, but we trust God’s timing. We are also grateful for the completed and ongoing roll-out of the PW Microenterprise Curriculum to the partners of Katuwang. Our hope is that the training will equip them and help in building their confidence as entrepreneurs.

Praises in Indonesia

We celebrate how we have been able to assist our partner in Indonesia, the GBI DMR9, in transitioning from being a church ministry to a cooperative. They are now known as Sejahtera Mandiri Semesta (SMS) ERC, a cooperative that has its own legal identity and its own governing leaders. We are looking forward to how God will allow for this LCI to thrive and transform more lives – as we walk alongside them in this journey.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia have dropped dramatically! With this, the economy is slowly opening up, allowing for more movements and interactions. Our partnership manager together with our LCI is looking forward to finally be able to hold the graduation of those who completed the Train the Trainers of the PW Microenterprise Curriculum. This has been put off due to the spike of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia last July.

Praises in Myanmar

Through the collaborative efforts of PW and Myanmar BA team, we have been able to provide support to our LCI as they minister to the last, the lost, and the least. The funds we have sent through another organization, Frontier Works of Singapore, are allowing for our LCI provide food and medical relief packs to the internally displaced people of Myanmar.

“When trouble comes, people look for God!” That is especially true in Myanmar. Pastor Jeremy, our LCI leader in Myanmar, shares stories of how they are not only able to meet the physical needs of the Myanmar people by providing them food packs, but how they are also able to feed their souls by introducing to them the Bread of Life! He shares of the difficulties they face every day, yet in all that, God provides the strength they need to keep moving forward!

We Move With Him! There have been times when it felt like we are on a standstill. That our suffering is not momentarily – but God always shows up and proves to us that He is sovereign and in control. He calls us to continue to take steps of faith every day. Because God is working and He is moving mountains for us – so as He moves, we will move with Him!

Thank you for journeying with us and joining us in our suffering! “For weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes in the morning.”
