This carpenter serves others through business
Gaspar, his wife, and their seven children lived on the fringes of Guatemala City, just a stone’s throw from the largest garbage dump in all Central America. Marked by hazardous conditions and frequent gang violence, life near this waste-filled ravine was difficult for Gaspar and his family. Further, accessing special care for their son with cerebral palsy was a frequent challenge in this “red zone.”
Fortunately, Gaspar had a reliable income working as a carpenter, unlike thousands of people in the area who relied on scavenging to survive. As an employee, however, he had no control over his schedule.
“I had no time for my family, and I knew my son needed me,” Gaspar said.
He decided to work for himself, crafting wood products like pergolas and kitchen cabinets and selling them to a growing customer base. Through word of mouth and excellent products, Gaspar built his business, using his skills to support his household.
Lacking business experience, however, he didn’t track costs. The small things added up, and sometimes he'd complete a job without earning anything at all.
When Gaspar partnered with AMG and Partners Worldwide, everything changed. Through training, he learned to manage his finances and better price his labor. And through business fairs and Shark Tank-style pitch events, Gaspar grew his confidence and connected with a network of leaders, volunteers, and coaches willing to share their expertise.
Previously, Gaspar never accounted for expenses like sandpaper, rags, electricity, or tool wear. Training helped him to include these costs from the beginning. “I started managing my expenses,” Gaspar said, “and little by little, I began to see real profit.”
Though daily orders keep Gaspar busy, he still finds ways to serve his community. He’s coached 20 students from his neighborhood, employing some for larger projects. And when hurricanes devastated Guatemalan communities in 2020, Gaspar volunteered to build homes for families who had lost everything.
Gaspar hopes to move his family into a safer, healthier neighborhood. In the meantime, he plans to grow his business and hire additional employees, creating a firm foundation for the future.
“I thank God for every opportunity,” Gaspar said. “He has given me work, He has given me clients, and through Partners Worldwide and AMG, He has given me knowledge and a network that changed my life. Now I can provide for my family, care for my son, give jobs to others, and offer my children a better future.”
