Meet Peter, a microentrepreneur and loan client of Christian Entrepreneurs Savings and Credit Society (CHESS), PW’s oldest partner.
Peter sells household items from a roadside stall just north of Nairobi, Kenya. Mops, pillows, buckets, suitcases—you name it, he’s got it. He also runs a bicycle repair store and a third business selling charcoal.
Peter was able to buy stock and expand his businesses through loans from CHESS, totaling over $5,000. These thriving ventures provide for the needs of Peter, his wife, and his five schoolchildren. But it’s not just about putting money in his pocket—it’s redemptive!
Redemptive business leaders serve as beacons of reconciliation, embodying the values of God’s kingdom in their communities. They use business to heal what is broken. And they see every person as created in God’s image: equal, talented, and creative.
That’s Peter.
Peter knows the struggles facing his community. He sees how the youth struggle to find hope for the future. And so, Peter employed young men in his community to package charcoal to sell as cooking fuel! He mentors them not only in business but also on how to be responsible family men.
In short, Peter is providing them with a source of income while growing their skills, values, and confidence.
