This Honey is Buzzworthy
Nokuthula was no stranger to hard work. A subsistence farmer, she spent her days tending cattle, goats, vegetables, and honeybees…
How this florist and father brought color back to his city through a family business
Pedro walked alone. The streets were empty, silent except for the rattle of his cart as it bounced along the worn cobblestones. The candy-colored houses to either side were shuttered, their doors locked. It hardly felt like the same vibrant city he knew and loved; rather, like a stage without any actors, or a scene from a science-fiction movie.
But it wasn’t science fiction. It was 2020, and the pandemic had turned Pedro’s life upside down. He lived with his wife and their five children in Antigua; a small Guatemalan city located in the shadow of three volcanoes. Amidst hardship and uncertainty, Pedro's family struggled to stay afloat.
In search of a better income, Pedro left his job and became an entrepreneur. Beginning with just $10 and a borrowed handcart, he bought flowers from the local market and hauled them back to his makeshift storefront. It seemed like a long shot, and Pedro didn’t know what he would do if this endeavor failed. But just maybe he could provide for his family while bringing some joy back to his community. All he could do was trust in God.
Pedro’s church—our local partner in Antigua—helped him take his business to the next level. Through Gracia’s business training, coaching, and constant encouragement, Pedro developed the confidence and clarity he needed to go from surviving to thriving.
“We always needed that guidance and support, and we’re so thankful for it,” Pedro said.
Crucially, Pedro learned to think bigger. Armed with a business plan, he began seeking other distribution outlets to expand his reach. He formed partnerships with prominent hotels in Antigua, decorating their spaces with beautiful displays and selling arrangements directly to guests.
Pedro continued to expand beyond foot traffic, supplying flowers to events like weddings and parties.
From humble beginnings, Pedro’s business has since transformed into a thriving family enterprise that employs two others from their community. Today, Pedro manages sales and administration, while his wife and daughter design and create beautiful floral arrangements.
From bringing in $7,500 in 2020, Pedro grew his revenue to $37,500 in 2024: five times more than his first year! With this growth, Pedro and his family can not only meet their basic needs but purchase a pickup truck and some land. One of Pedro’s greatest joys has been helping his daughter start her own flower shop—carrying forward the legacy of entrepreneurship.
Looking ahead, Pedro dreams of hiring someone to help manage finances and expanding his operations with multiple shops throughout Antigua. He is committed to growth, impact, and creating more jobs in his community.
“Thanks to you,” Pedro said, “we’ve been able to grow and transform—not just our business, but our lives and the lives of others.”
