Bahirnesh, a 38-year-old entrepreneur from Yirgachefe, Ethiopia, never planned on becoming an entrepreneur. But with her relentless work ethic and smart financial choices, she transformed a modest shoe stand has grown into a profitable business. Bahirnesh opens early, skips lunch breaks to serve customers, and treats every day as an opportunity to grow.

Not so long ago, things for Bahirnesh were radically different. She was married, with a child on the way. Then, shortly after the birth of their son, her husband suddenly died.

With nowhere else to go, Bahirnesh returned to live with her parents—but their support came at a cost. They forbade Bahirnesh from finding work, restricted her personal activities, and relegated her to the role of household assistant.

Determined to chart her own future, Bahirnesh moved out of her parents’ home and began her entrepreneurial journey.

Standing on Her Own

A local pastor from Ethiopian Kalehiwot church (one of PW’s partners) connected Bahirnesh to Enat bank (another partner), knowing they could offer the support she needed. There, Bahirnesh accessed training and a loan of around $200, which she used to expand her stock and meet the growing demand for her shoes.

Month after month, she made her repayments on time, earning the trust of Enat Bank and setting an example for other borrowers. But Bahirnesh’s success went beyond loan repayments; in just six months, she saved approximately $55, making her the top saver among her peers.

“I could finally stand on my own, Praise God,” Bahirnesh said.

The Path Ahead

Bahirnesh still faces challenges. But armed with savings, business expertise, a network of support, and access to fair loans, Bahirnesh knows she’s up to the task. She plans to invest in a permanent location for her business, as well as expand her business portfolio by launching a grain shop!

Since remarried, Bahirnesh contributes to her family’s finances and inspires others in her community to create the life they desire.
